Please don’t put your Cell Phone in Your Bra!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and we all need to do everything that we can to prevent the development of breast cancer.  And this includes where you put your cell phone.  By stashing your cell phone in your bra/bra strap, you are subjecting your breast tissue to the harmful effects of electromagnetic wireless energy- both the thermal effect and the physiological effects.   We all love our cell phones and want to protect our breasts.  Read on regarding the connection…

save the girls, breast cancer awarness, don't store cell phones in bra

A recent study conducted by Breastlink in California (1) revealed a strong connection between cell phones placed in the bra and development of breast cancer in young women.

As many of you know, breast cancer in women under the age of 40, is very uncommon.  In this study, the four cases occurred in women aged 21-39.  Radiographic images showed multiple tumor sites in the breast directly under the phone contact.   Each woman regularly carried her smart phone directly against her breasts, tucked under her bra, for up to 10 hours a day and had been doing so for several years.   Pathology reports revealed striking similarities between these cases:  in the type of tumor, the grade of tumor, and the specific structural features of the tumor.

Some companies have even started making bras with specific pockets to hold cell phones and other “needed” items.

Please do not put your cell phone here either!

According to Breast surgeon and researcher in Breastlink study, John West, men too are getting breast cancer by carrying cell phones in their shirt pockets.

I’m not one who normally believes in conspiracy theories, but the evidence  has been overwhelming regarding the harmful effects of wi-fi radiation.  When huge amounts of money are involved, scientific evidence can be contested or simply ignored.   Remember the tobacco industry in the 1950’s?

While there may not be a direct “cause and effect” between cell phone use and breast cancer, I believe that we should be cautious with the use of our cell phones and where we place them.  Increasing evidence is showing an effect between wi-fi radiation and development of cancers, as well as many other conditions.

As an Ob/Gyn, I examine breasts every day.  If this information saves just one woman from developing breast cancer, I will have done my job in educating to the best of my ability.

Here are 5 tips to decrease the harmful effects of wi-fi radiation:

  1. Use a headset or speaker instead of holding the phone up to your ear

  2. When in use, hold phone away from your body

  3. Text more and talk less

  4. Call when the signal is strong

  5. Don’t store your phone in your pocket (or under your pillow)

What do I now use for wi-fi protection?  Previously it was the GIA Wellness cell guard.  Now it’s the GIA wellness Cell Guard Case – combined protection for your phone (from damage from dropping) AND protection for your body against the harmful effects of electromagnetic radiation.
