The Beginning of a Transformation…

Ever since I was young, I had a deep interest in health and wellness, especially when it came to animals. I remember cutting out articles from the pet section of the LA Times and compiling them into a cardboard binder. Taking care of our cats and dog was my passion, and initially, I dreamed of becoming a veterinarian and attending UC Davis Veterinary School.

However, everything changed after I had the opportunity to shadow a Nurse Practitioner during my undergraduate years. As I observed GYN exams and witnessed the importance of contraceptive counseling for students, I realized the vital need for more women in medicine. It was at that moment when I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics and gynecology.

And the the Degrees…and the Doctor Journey

And so began my journey towards becoming a doctor. In 1984, I proudly graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of California, Berkeley. Following that, I attended the prestigious University of California San Diego Medical School, graduating in 1989. The residency program in San Diego stole my heart, and I was chosen as the only medical student from UCSD to join the Obstetrics/Gynecology Residency Program at UC San Diego Medical Center. I completed the intensive, four-year program in 1993.

Driven by a desire to explore and embrace new experiences, I made the bold decision to leave behind my California roots and embark on a journey as a traveling (Locum Tenens) physician. This remarkable opportunity allowed me to visit various parts of the United States, including North Dakota, Minnesota, and Vermont. It was through these diverse encounters that I honed my adaptability and grew both personally and professionally.

In 1994 San Diego was again calling me back and I returned to establish my own group practice, Pacific Coast Women’s Health. Over 12 years I delivered hundreds of babies and shared the joy of pregnancy and childbirth with my wonderful patients.

Accolades, Books, and more…

In October 2005, I won the acclaim of San Diego’s Top Doctors in Ob/Gyn. Shortly after that, I began doing international clinical trials in numerous areas of women’s health, including menopause, perimenopause, and libido.

After experiencing the joy of delivering hundreds of babies and sharing the journey of pregnancy and childbirth with my patients, I knew I wanted to make a greater impact. That’s when I began conducting international clinical trials in different areas of women’s health, focusing on topics such as menopause, perimenopause, and libido. It was during this time that I realized there was a lack of resources on female libido, inspiring me to write my own book.

In 2010, I proudly released my book, “Healthy Sex Drive, Healthy You: What Your Libido Reveals About Your Life,” which went on to win the award for best-Published Non-fiction, Self-Help, and Inspiration in 2011. The positive response further motivated me to expand my practice and create the Amazing Over 40 Community.

Having dedicated over 30 years to providing care for women in perimenopause and menopause, I’ve heard countless dismissive statements about this natural transition. It deeply troubles me when women are told to “just deal with it” or are prescribed antidepressants without exploring other options. That’s why I commit myself to helping women during this phase of life, providing accurate information and formulating personalized treatment plans. I focus on incorporating natural measures like exercise, diet, and lifestyle changes, but also advocate for bio-identical hormone therapy when necessary.

In 2022, due to the Covid Pandemic, I transitioned to Telemedicine to continue caring for women around the world as they navigate the challenges of perimenopause and menopause. This shift has allowed me to reach and support even more individuals during this transformative time.

My Own Personal Health Journey

My personal journey has also played a significant role in shaping my approach to healthcare. In 2018, I faced and conquered Stage 1 Breast Cancer while simultaneously caring for my mother who was battling dementia. This experience deepened my understanding of the struggles many individuals face, including the diagnosis of cancer and caring for an aging parent. I truly became the patient , and NOT the doctor, experiencing the vulnerability and fear which accompanies many doctor visits.

My breast cancer diagnosis involved stressful biopsies and imaging ( bilateral breast MRI with/without contrast) as well as surgical treatment including a left breast lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy for staging. Luckily, my cancer was at an early stage, Stage 1b, and I did not have to undergo any chemotherapy treatment. However, I did undergo 4 weeks of targeted radiation to decrease the risk of recurrence, lowering the 5-year recurrence risk from 10-15% to 5%.

After lengthy discussions with my surgeon, radiologist and oncologist, I made the bold decision to continue with my bioidentical hormone therapy, despite all of their objections and sentiments against this.. Why did I choose this? Because the level of brain fog and lack of mental clarity did NOT allow me to perform at the level I needed to to continue taking care of patients. Trying to remember the small details, names, dates and numbers – which usually came very easily to me – were now extremely difficult and distressing. I chose quality of life over the possible risk of recurrence of breast cancer. By the way, I do NOT believe that bioidentical hormone therapy causes breast cancer and I offer many studies and resources which substantiate this fact.

Alongside my medical challenges, my aging mother was battling through the distressful decline which accompanies dementia. This relentless and unyielding disease opened my eyes to the sheer fragility of the human mind and body – leading to a major shift in the way I was living my life. Stress was ubiquitous, both with my mother’s visits and my life battling cancer, and I knew that the universe was sending me a stark signal. Make a change or go down this path of disease. My mother passed on July 31, 2021 with me at her bedside as she took her last breath. It was an extremely heart-breaking experience, and one which I will never forget. This amazing woman brought me into this world and now I was there guiding her to leaving it.

Life is fragile and we need to be grateful for each and every day we have on this earth.
